Alexander Ritzmann arbeitet seit über 20 Jahren zu den Themenfeldern Demokratieförderung und Prävention von gewaltorientiertem Extremismus. Als Sachverständiger hat er unter anderem den Deutschen Bundestag, das Europäische Parlament und das US House of Representatives beraten.

Beim Counter Extremism Project (CEP) Berlin leitet Alexander den Arbeitsbereich Analyse und Strategien gegen gewaltorientierte / terroristische rechtsextreme (transnationalen) Netzwerke, offline und online. Zudem arbeitet Alexander zu Fragen der Internetregulierung (z.B. NetzDG und EU Digital Services Act) mit dem Fokus auf extremistische/terroristische und illegale Inhalte.

Alexander berät zudem das Radicalization Awareness Network (RAN) der Europäischen Kommission, insbesondere zu extremistischen Ideologien, Narrativen und strategischer Kommunikation. Dort hat er eine Handreichung für effektive Alternative-und Gegennarrative (GAMMMA+) mitentwickelt, die bei Praktiker:innen in der EU und darüber hinaus Anwendung findet. Von 2016 bis 2020 war er Mitglied des „Steering Committee“ des RAN und Co-Vorsitzender der „Working Group on Communication and Narratives“. 

Bei der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik (DGAP) ko-konzipierte und moderierte er das „International Forum for Expert Exchange on Countering Islamist Extremism“ (InFoEx) von 2018 bis zum Projektende 2021. Von 2010 bis 2012 und von 2017 bis 2020 war Alexander wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter/Senior Research Fellow am Brandenburgischen Institut für Gesellschaft und Sicherheit (BIGS). Dort forschte er u.a. zu den Strukturen der Hisbollah und von al Qaida und hat das im Rahmen des Bundesprogramms „Demokratie leben“ geförderte Präventionsprojekt „Integration auf Augenhöhe“ (2017-2020), bei dem ein Wertediskurs unter und mit Geflüchteten im Mittelpunkt stand, geleitet

Alexander ist Mitglied des „European Expert Network on Terrorism Issues (EENeT)“ des Bundeskriminalamtes (BKA). 2016 hat er als Lehrbeauftragter ein Seminar für Master Studenten zum Thema „Terrorismus und Propaganda“ an der Universität Potsdam gehalten.

Von 2007 bis Ende 2017 hat Alexander (mit Unterbrechungen) mit der European Foundation for Democracy in Brüssel in verschiedenen Funktionen zusammengearbeitet. Von September 2012 bis Dezember 2015 war er als Senior Adviser MENA-Region und Projektleiter für die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH im Landesbüro Ägypten, Kairo, tätig. 2011/12 war er bereits Fellow am BIGS. Ritzmann war DAAD Stipendiat und und non-resident Fellow des Washingtoner Think Tanks AICGS an der Johns Hopkins Universität (2007-2012). Von 2001-2006 war er Mitglied des Berliner Abgeordnetenhauses (FDP-Fraktion), stellvertretender Fraktionsvorsitzender und Sprecher für die Themen Innere Sicherheit und Datenschutz. Er war zudem Mitglied des „Ältestenrates“, dem parlamentarischen Gremium, dass die Abläufe des Abgeordnetenhauses festsetzt und steuert.  In 2004 hat Alexander als Vertreter der FDP erfolgreich an der Verfassungsreform zur Stärkung direktdemokratischer Elemente mitgewirkt. Im Jahr 2000 hat Alexander Ritzmann ein Studium der Politikwissenschaft (Diplom) an der Freien Universität Berlin abgeschlossen.

Alexander Ritzmann has been working on the promotion of liberal democracy and the prevention of violent extremism for more than 20 years . He has testified before the German Bundestag, the European Parliament and the US House of Representatives on these matters.

Alexander leads the work of CEP Berlin on violent far-right extremist and terrorist (transnational) networks, offline and online. He also focuses on extremist and terrorist content and internet regulation (e.g. the German NetzDG and  the EU Digital Services Act).

Alexander is also advising the European Commission’s  Radicalisation Awareness Network (RAN), where he particularly focuses on extremist ideologies, narratives and strategic communications. From 2016 to 2020, Alexander was a member of the RAN Steering Committee and Co-Chair of its Communication and Narratives (C&N) Working Group. In this capacity he co-developed the GAMMMA+ model for effective alternative and counter narratives, which serves as a tool-kit for practitioners all over the EU and beyond.

From 2018 until the end of the project in 2021, he co-developed and facilitated the „International Forum for Expert Exchange on Countering Islamist Extremism“ (InFoEx) at the German Council of Foreign Relations (DGAP). From 2010  to 2012 and from 2017 to 2020, he was a Senior Research Fellow at the Brandenburg Institute for Society and Security (BIGS) in Potsdam, Germany. There, Alexander published research on the internal structures of Hezbollah and Al Qaeda and he directed a P/CVE project, funded by the German federal government, that focused on the role of values in the integration process of refugees in Germany (2017-2020).

Between 2007 to 2017, Alexander worked with the European Foundation for Democracy in Brussels, Belgium, in different capacities and with a break between breaks in between. From September 2012 – December 2015, he was based in Cairo, Egypt, where he worked as Senior Advisor MENA Region and Project Manager for GIZ, the German Development Cooperation. He has also lived and worked in Berlin, Brussels, Beirut, Jerusalem, Ramallah and Washington D.C. In 2007 he was a DAAD-Fellow at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS), Johns Hopkins University, in Washington, DC.

From 2001 – 2006, Alexander was a member of the Berlin State Parliament, serving as the deputy chairman of the Free Democrat´s (FDP) parliamentary group and as their ranking member on the homeland security, intelligence and data protection committees. He was also the FDP´s representative at the „council of elders“, which oversees all parliamentary procedures, and of the constitutional commission for the reform of direct democracy. Alexander received his Master’s degree (Diplom) in Political Science from the Free University Berlin in 2000.
